Welcome to the Minerals West Coast October newsletter. Hard to believe that it will soon be Christmas again!
In this issue we look at the Mineral Resource Strategy for the West Coast, report on Pike River Coal's success in the West Coast Conservation Awards and progress of the Marine Protection Forum, and background the proposed West Coast Industry-Education Partnership (WCIEP).
Mineral Resource Strategy for the West Coast
The value of mining industry on the West Coast has more than doubled since 2002, increasing at a much faster rate the total value of mineral production from NZ overall. The total value of NZs mineral output increased by 65% over the 4 year period, while the increase in value for the West Coast was 130%. There is no room for complacency, however. If we are to continue to grow we need a coordinated strategy that stimulates a renewed phase of exploration and development.

West Coast Marine Protection Forum
The West Coast Marine Protection Forum was established in 2005 with a wide range of representatives, including: community members, fishers, tangata whenua, conservation groups and local authorities.
The Forum is working towards implementing the Marine Protected Areas (MPA) Policy for the West Coast. The policy and associated guidelines introduce a range of options for habitat protection in the marine environment and range from no take Marine Reserves, through to Fisheries Act Restrictions in order to protect habitats. The policy requires that impacts on existing users should be minimised.

West Coast Industry-Education Partnership
Both the extractive and education sectors are critical regional economic drivers. Traditionally, industry expects educators to provide literate potential employees and educators set out to provide these. This relationship was appropriate when supply exceeded demand and employers could select the 'cream', but in times of sustained shortage of skills and stagnant regional population growth this needs to change. It is proposed that the resource and education sectors would both benefit from working more collaboratively to match requirements with capability.
